"There is a Magic Deeper Still" is a 40-page, full color little book of fantasy and fairy tale illustrations, poems, stories and notes. Some are recognizable, some are new and some old; all are compiled under the guise of a collection of authentic scholarly items from my created author, "Esmerelda Twicket".
I worked on this zine with watercolor, ink, pencil and gouache for the greater part of 2018 in both the U.K. and the Northwest U.S., and it holds a lot of hidden inspirations from all the museums I visited, the art I saw and books I read. There are some hidden treasures inside each zine, including a tiny book of Medieval Fairy History & Mythology and one Enchanted Playing Card.
The title is taken from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis:
"It means that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation."
